Handwriting shapes include rounded bowls, curved shoulders and pointed turns. Compare the same letter in several words before changing its form.

Compare the visible forms

ROUNDED ARCHES
Rounded arches
Smooth curves carry the upper turns.
SHARP ANGULAR PEAKS
Pointed peaks
Straight strokes meet at sharp peaks.
ROUNDED + ANGULAR
Mixed turns
A rounded turn is followed by a pointed one.

What to inspect

Look at the shoulder of n, the bottom of u, the arm of r and the bowl of o. A curve changes direction gradually; an angular turn forms a sharper corner. Identify where the turn belongs within the letter.

Make the comparison

Tall peaks can dominate a word’s outline while its smaller bodies remain rounded. Broad ink can fill a narrow corner. Compare local shapes at the same scale rather than naming the whole word from one prominent stroke.

Practice with a sample

Collect three n forms and three u forms. Trace their actual turns, then group them as rounded, pointed or mixed. Rewrite one unclear form with a wider interior space.
