Learn the capital and small cursive Y →

Capital Y

  1. Draw diagonally down from the upper left to the middle junction, then up to the upper right.
  2. Lift the pen and draw the central stem from the junction to the baseline.

Small y

  1. Draw the short left diagonal from x-height down to the baseline.
  2. Lift the pen, start on the upper right, and draw the long diagonal down-left into the descender space, finishing with a small leftward turn.

Watch for this: A small y whose right-hand stroke stops at the baseline resembles v. Extend the right-hand diagonal below the baseline and finish its small leftward turn.

Write capital Y

Meet two upper diagonals at the center, then continue with a stem to the baseline.

Write lowercase y

Slope down from the upper left and add the longer right diagonal continuing beneath the baseline.

Keep the form distinct

Compare v and y: y continues below the line; v ends at its low point.

Practice y in words

Print practice: your and say.

Copy “your” and “say”, leaving each letter separate. Circle the clearest y in the row and use its body size for your next attempt.
