Handwriting legibility: distinguish letters and words

Handwriting legibility is how readily a reader identifies its words. Check letter distinctions and word boundaries with a short transcription exercise.

READING DESK

Reference, comparison & reading

Compare the visible forms

CLOSED OVAL BOWL
Distinct oval
The bowl and side stem are distinct.
OPEN TOP APERTURE
Open oval
The opening may change how a reader identifies the letter.
COMPRESSED SLIT BOWL
Compressed body
A narrow body leaves less interior space.

What to inspect

Ask someone to read a passage without first seeing its wording. Record missed words and hesitations. Then inspect recurring confusion pairs such as a/o, n/u or a short l/t.

Make the comparison

Readable body shapes need enough interior space and distinct endings. Clear word gaps can help a reader separate the groups, but cannot repair two letters that have become the same shape.

Practice with a sample

Write ten ordinary words and have a reader transcribe them. Choose one recurring error, adjust the relevant bowl, stem or gap, then repeat with a new ten-word line.
