Capital A

  1. Start at the baseline, rise diagonally to the capital-height point, then descend to the baseline on the right.
  2. Lift the pen and draw the crossbar between the two legs.

Small a

  1. Curve around the small oval from its upper-right side, returning to the right near the baseline.
  2. Lift the pen and draw a straight right-hand stem from the x-height line to the baseline. This model uses a single-storey a.

Watch for this: Leaving a gap between the oval and the right-hand stem makes the small a hard to distinguish from an open u. Bring the oval back to the right-hand stem, then keep that stem straight to the baseline.
