How to write D

Start with a clear capital and small print form. Follow the ordered strokes, then copy the letter without tracing.

Learn the capital and small cursive D →

Capital D

  1. Start at the baseline and draw upward along the straight left stem to capital height.
  2. Continue across the top, round the right side, and return along the bottom to the foot of the stem.

Small d

  1. Draw the tall right-hand stem downward from capital height to the baseline.
  2. Lift the pen and draw the small oval on the left, returning to the right-hand stem near the baseline.

Watch for this: A right-hand stem that stops at x-height makes the small d look like a. Extend the right-hand stem above the oval to the full ascender height.

Letter shapes, words and corrections

Write capital D

Make a tall upright and curve a broad bowl from its top around to the baseline.

Write lowercase d

Place a rounded bowl to the left of a tall right-hand stem.

Keep the form distinct

Compare d with a: the body is similar, but d’s stem rises above the body band.

Practice d in words

Print practice: day and added.

Copy “day” and “added”, leaving each letter separate. Circle the clearest d in the row and use its body size for your next attempt.
