How to write W

Start with a clear capital and small print form. Follow the ordered strokes, then copy the letter without tracing.

Learn the capital and small cursive W →

Capital W

  1. Start at the upper left, descend diagonally to the first baseline point, and rise to the lower central peak.
  2. Continue down to the second baseline point and rise to capital height on the right.

Small w

  1. Start at x-height, descend diagonally to the first baseline point, and rise to the small central peak.
  2. Continue down to the second baseline point and rise to x-height on the right.

Watch for this: Omitting one bottom point collapses the small w into a v-like shape. Keep two baseline points separated by one central peak.

Write capital W

Make two low points with a shorter central rise between the outer tall strokes.

Write lowercase w

Use two connected pointed troughs within the body band.

Keep the form distinct

Compare v and w: w contains two troughs rather than one.

Practice w in words

Print practice: word and always.

Copy “word” and “always”, leaving each letter separate. Circle the clearest w in the row and use its body size for your next attempt.
