HANDWRITING REFERENCE
Connected handwriting and separate letter forms
Connected handwriting uses strokes between neighboring letters. Follow the ink inside words to separate joins, touching shapes and clear gaps.
READING DESK
Reference, comparison & reading
Compare the visible forms
Curves bridge adjacent bodies.
Clear gaps divide the bodies.
One join is present and another is open.
What to inspect
Choose a word with several lowercase letters. Trace the bridge from one body to the next. Mark dots and crossbars separately because they are parts of letters rather than joins between them.
Make the comparison
A still image shows connected ink. Observing the writer or a recording shows the order of strokes and pen lifts. Compare the middle of several words to distinguish a repeated join from an accidental touch.
Practice with a sample
Mark letter joins in five words with one color and open gaps inside them with another. Read the words again to check whether each boundary remains recognizable.
