Z forms in the traditional reference

Straight z
A diagonal links two horizontal strokes. Compare their lengths and the angle of the middle stroke.
Lower-zone loop
The connected form includes a return below the baseline. Inspect the lower loop separately from the body-height diagonal.
Expanded capital
The capital spans the full letter height. Compare its width with the lower-case writing rather than assigning the capital’s size to the entire sample.

A z changes direction across an upper stroke, a diagonal and a lower stroke. Some connected forms add a descender, so begin by locating the body band.

Traditional graphology focus

In traditional letter-reading vocabulary, this letter’s focus is: z-stroke angles, lower-zone loops and expressive agility. A graphology reading considers that theme alongside the form’s position and repetition in the sample.

Compare the visible details

  • Does the letter remain in the body band?
  • Is there a lower extension?
  • Can the diagonal be separated from its incoming join?

Read z in words

Use “zone” and “size” as comparison words. Note where z opens, closes and meets its neighbor. Keep an enlarged capital separate from ordinary body letters when describing the sample.
