Observation & reference
P forms in the traditional reference
The stem continues beneath the body bowl. Look at its depth separately from the bowl’s height.
The lower extension occupies less space. Compare it with g and y descenders before describing the sample’s lower zone.
The bowl sits in the upper part of a full-height capital. Capital P and lowercase p therefore have different zone relationships.
Lowercase p sets a bowl above a stem that extends below the baseline. Compare the bowl’s closure with the stem’s depth and direction.
Traditional graphology focus
In traditional letter-reading vocabulary, this letter’s focus is: descender length, bowl closure and physical drive. A graphology reading considers that theme alongside the form’s position and repetition in the sample.
Compare the visible details
- Is the bowl fully closed?
- How deep is the stem beneath the writing line?
- Does its stem lean like other downstrokes?
Read p in words
Use “page” and “paper” as comparison words. Note where p opens, closes and meets its neighbor. Keep an enlarged capital separate from ordinary body letters when describing the sample.
