Observation & reference
L forms in the traditional reference
The ascending and returning strokes enclose a slim upper loop. Inspect the loop near its narrowest part.
The upper extension encloses a broader space. Compare that width with the body letters below it.
The tall stroke stays open. Its finishing curve connects the stem with the next letter without creating an upper loop.
Lowercase l is often a tall loop or a simple rising-and-falling stem. Its height, enclosed width and final join give three useful observations.
Traditional graphology focus
In traditional letter-reading vocabulary, this letter’s focus is: narrow loops, wide loops and simple unlooped stems. A graphology reading considers that theme alongside the form’s position and repetition in the sample.
Compare the visible details
- How high does l extend above the body band?
- Is its upper loop narrow, wide or absent?
- Does the exit stroke continue directly into the next letter?
Read l in words
Use “line” and “little” as comparison words. Note where l opens, closes and meets its neighbor. Keep an enlarged capital separate from ordinary body letters when describing the sample.
