Observation & reference

K forms in the traditional reference

Straight arms
Two diagonal arms meet the stem near the middle. Compare the junction height with the surrounding body letters.
Looped upper stem
An ascender loop accompanies a curved lower arm. Look at the stem loop independently from the smaller space around the arm junction.
Detached arms
The arms stop short of the stem. Check whether the separation repeats or is an isolated ink break.

A handwritten k is recognizable by its tall stem and the junction of its upper and lower arms. Inspect where the arms meet before judging their angle.

Traditional graphology focus

In traditional letter-reading vocabulary, this letter’s focus is: types of k: straight arms, looped stems and rebellious buckle forms. A graphology reading considers that theme alongside the form’s position and repetition in the sample.

Compare the visible details

  • Where do the arms meet?
  • Is the lower arm rounded or angular?
  • Do any arms become confused with the next letter?

Read k in words

Use “keep” and “making” as comparison words. Note where k opens, closes and meets its neighbor. Keep an enlarged capital separate from ordinary body letters when describing the sample.
