Observation & reference

F forms in the traditional reference

Two extensions
The stroke spans both upper and lower zones. Compare how much space each extension occupies around the central crossbar.
Long straight stem
An unlooped stem carries the form. The crossbar can still slope or extend beyond the neighboring letters.
Capital F
Capital F has a full-height stem and two horizontal arms. Separate the top arm from the lower crossbar.

Lowercase f may extend above and below the body band. Examine the upper loop, lower extension and crossbar as three separate elements.

Traditional graphology focus

In traditional letter-reading vocabulary, this letter’s focus is: upper and lower extensions, crossbar balance and organizational talent. A graphology reading considers that theme alongside the form’s position and repetition in the sample.

Compare the visible details

  • Where is the crossbar in relation to the body band?
  • Are either of the extensions enclosed?
  • Does a lower extension cross the following writing line?

Read f in words

Use “from” and “offer” as comparison words. Note where f opens, closes and meets its neighbor. Keep an enlarged capital separate from ordinary body letters when describing the sample.
