HANDWRITING REFERENCE

Handwriting margins and page layout

Handwriting margins change with paragraph indents and word lengths. Trace the writing block and check the first, middle and final rows.

Reference, comparison & reading

Compare the visible forms

MARGIN
Steady left edge
Several lines begin at the same position.
TOPWIDE
Widening left margin
Successive starts move farther into the page.
Irregular starts
Starts alternate; inspect paragraph breaks and indentation.

What to inspect

Use a full-page view. Mark the first ordinary line start, the longest line end and the last complete line. Note ruled boundaries, folds, printed headings and deliberate paragraph indents.

Make the comparison

A steady left edge has line starts near one position. A widening margin moves those starts farther into the page. The right edge can remain ragged as different words reach the end of a line.

Practice with a sample

Draw a light boundary around the writing block. Measure the left gap beside the first, middle and final three lines, then compare paragraph starts separately from the lines that follow.
